OMPIIE
JNR

Born in Zimbabwe and based in Johannesburg, Ompiie Jnr is a DJ and producer developing a sound somewhere between Afro House, Afro Tech and the deeper side of African electronic music.

His music comes from a DJ’s perspective. Rhythm is given room to develop, percussion carries the movement, and the atmosphere is allowed to build rather than being rushed. It is a style shaped as much by listening to a dance floor as it is by working in the studio.

His 2025 project ‘Afrika to Ibiza, Pt. I’ brought several sides of that sound together across six original tracks. The project feels less like a statement about a destination and more like a reflection of the journey itself: African rhythm moving through different spaces, scenes and dance floors.

In 2026, releases such as ‘Envisions’ and ‘Lost in Bali’ continued that progression. ‘Envisions’, released through Deep In Your Soul, is a nearly seven minute Afro House production built around a steady 120 BPM groove. It also found its way into Beatport’s Closing Essentials 2026 Afro House selection, giving the track another connection to the international DJ circuit.

He has gradually taken that approach beyond Johannesburg, with music released through labels including MoBlack Records, MO GROOVE, Cafe De Anatolia REC and All Shades Of The Drum Recordings, and a catalogue that reflects a growing network of collaborations across the African electronic scene.

Ompiie Jnr is still building, and perhaps that is the most interesting part of his story. There is no need to force his music into one definition yet — the catalogue is already showing where he is going.
